What each domain covers

People (42%)

7 topics

The largest PMP domain. Scenario questions test your instinct as a leader rather than your knowledge of tools. PMI consistently prefers: having a direct conversation before escalating; empowering the team to solve problems; understanding root cause before acting. When in doubt, the answer that involves communication and collaboration first is usually correct.

  • Managing conflict and negotiation
  • Leading a team: servant leadership, motivation, emotional intelligence
  • Supporting team performance and development
  • Empowering team members and stakeholders
  • Building collaborative relationships and trust
  • Managing virtual/remote and cross-cultural teams
  • Removing impediments and blockers

Process (50%)

7 topics

Half the exam — mix of predictive and agile equally. For EVM: CPI > 1 = under budget (good); SPI > 1 = ahead of schedule (good). For agile, know the 4 Scrum ceremonies: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective — and who runs each. Retrospective = team inspects process; Review = team demos to stakeholders.

  • Predictive: scope management (WBS), schedule (CPM, Gantt), cost (EVM: EV, AC, PV, CPI, SPI)
  • Risk management: risk register, qualitative/quantitative analysis, risk response strategies
  • Quality management: quality assurance vs quality control, cost of quality
  • Procurement: contract types (FFP, T&M, CPFF), procurement lifecycle
  • Agile: Scrum (roles, ceremonies, artifacts), Kanban, velocity, definition of done
  • Hybrid: tailoring predictive and agile approaches
  • Change management: integrated change control, change log

Business Environment (8%)

5 topics

Smallest domain but tests strategic thinking. Benefits realisation continues after project closure — PMs must plan for who tracks value delivery post-project. Compliance questions: if you discover a regulatory violation, raise it immediately through proper channels, even if it delays the project.

  • Benefits realisation and value delivery
  • Organisational change management
  • Project compliance: legal, regulatory, industry standards
  • Evaluating and delivering value to the organisation
  • Ensuring project aligns with organisational strategy
