Topics by unit

What each section covers

Number

6 topics

Foundation for all other topics. Reverse percentage and compound interest appear in almost every Paper 1 — learn the direct formula rather than the step-by-step method.

  • Integers, fractions, decimals
  • Powers, roots, and standard form
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Percentages (reverse, compound)
  • Estimation and rounding
  • Speed, distance, time

Algebra

6 topics

Algebraic manipulation is tested heavily in Paper 2. Factorising quadratics by inspection is faster than the formula — practise until it's automatic.

  • Expanding brackets and factorising
  • Solving linear and quadratic equations
  • Simultaneous equations
  • Changing the subject of a formula
  • Sequences and nth term
  • Indices and algebraic fractions

Geometry

7 topics

Circle theorems require you to state the theorem name for full marks. Bearings must be written as three digits (e.g. 045°, not 45°).

  • Angle properties (parallel lines, polygons)
  • Circle theorems
  • Congruence and similarity
  • Pythagorean theorem
  • Trigonometry (SOH-CAH-TOA)
  • Bearings
  • Loci and constructions

Mensuration

4 topics

Formulae are not given — memorise area of circle, cone, sphere. Similar shape ratios (k², k³) appear frequently in the last few questions of each paper.

  • Perimeter and area (all standard shapes)
  • Arc length and sector area
  • Volume and surface area (prism, cylinder, cone, sphere)
  • Similar shapes — area and volume ratios

Statistics & Probability

5 topics

Cumulative frequency and histograms are reliably tested. Remember: histogram y-axis is frequency density (frequency ÷ class width), not frequency.

  • Mean, median, mode from frequency tables
  • Cumulative frequency and box plots
  • Histograms (frequency density)
  • Tree diagrams and combined probability
  • Scatter graphs and line of best fit

What students ask most about O-Level Maths

How to revise O-Level Maths effectively

Work through at least five years of past papers from Cambridge. For Pakistan and Malaysia students, past papers from your local board (FBISE, SPM) are also important as question styles differ slightly. Always check the mark scheme — O-Level awards marks for method steps, not just final answers.

Where to find O-Level Maths past papers

Cambridge O-Level (4024) past papers are available on the Cambridge International website and on third-party revision sites. Pakistan students can find FBISE and provincial board papers on their respective board websites. Malaysian SPM papers are available via the Malaysian Examinations Board (Lembaga Peperiksaan).

What is the passing grade for O-Level Maths?

For Cambridge O-Level, grades run from A* (highest) to G. A grade C or above is widely considered a pass. For university entry in Pakistan and Malaysia, most programmes require at least a B. Check your institution's specific requirements.

How hard is O-Level Maths compared to IGCSE?

The content is nearly identical — both are based on the same Cambridge specification. IGCSE (0580) has a Core and Extended tier; Extended covers additional topics like functions, transformations, and vectors in more depth. O-Level (4024) is a single syllabus closer to the IGCSE Extended level.
