Can your child count out 9 blocks and tell you how many are left after taking away 3, using their fingers or objects?
Count together out loud, using real objects nearby whenever possible.
- •Children often count on their fingers correctly but make errors writing the number itself, mixing up 6/9 or reversing digits like 12/21. Writing practice matters as much as counting practice at this stage.
- •'Before' and 'after' number questions trip up children who can count forward fine but haven't practiced counting backward or counting starting from any number.
- •In word problems, children sometimes give the starting number because they miss the final question. Ask them to underline what the question wants to know before they begin counting.
5-minute offline activities
- •Kitchen Counting: count out spoons, buttons, or coins into groups of 5 or 10 while cooking or tidying up.

Hopping Down a Number Line
For Parents
- Draw a number line from 1 to 20 on the floor with chalk or tape and have your child hop along it.
- Hopping one step right answers 'what comes after'; one step left answers 'what comes before'; standing further right always means the bigger number.
- Use the same line to count backward from any number, and to check skip patterns like 2, 4, 6 by hopping two squares at a time.
- For number names, write a number as a digit and say its name together, then swap: say a name and have your child point to the digit.
- Do this daily for a week and it sticks fast.
For Teachers
'Before' questions are missed far more often than 'after' questions at this age — if a child struggles, have them count forward out loud from 1 every time rather than trying to count backward directly.

Blocks for Adding, Taking Away
For Parents
- Build a small block tower to make addition and subtraction visual: stack 4 blocks, then add 3 more to show addition.
- For subtraction, remove one block at a time and count how many remain.
- For missing-number problems, like 'I have 3 blocks and need 10 — how many more do I add?', start with the 3 blocks and add blocks one by one until you reach 10, counting how many you added.
- For zero facts, place an empty cup beside a block tower and ask your child what changed when nothing was placed in or taken from the tower.
- Seeing the math happen with real objects helps children understand the idea better than memorizing a rule.
For Teachers
Watch for children who can solve '6 + 2' but freeze on '2 + 6' — flipping the order in a follow-up question quickly reveals whether addition is understood as commutative yet, or just memorized in one direction.

Tests whether a child can read a short real-life story, decide whether it needs addition or subtraction, and solve it correctly, a step beyond fact recall because it requires understanding the situation first.
Acting Out the Story First
For Parents
- Act the story out with real objects instead of solving it on paper first.
- If the problem is about toys, get actual toys (or buttons) and physically add or take some away as you read each line.
- Ask your child to say back what is happening in their own words before touching any objects — 'so we start with 9 marbles, and some go away.'
- Recognizing whether a story describes joining or taking away is the real skill being practiced, not just doing the math.
For Teachers
As a quick check, read the problem aloud but leave off the question at the end and ask the child to act it out with counters first. If they can show the joining or taking-away correctly without seeing the question, the story sense is there and any wrong answer is a counting slip, not a comprehension gap.
1. If you have 5 candies and eat 2, how many candies do you have left?

A Two-Minute Shape Hunt
For Parents
- Go on a two-minute shape hunt around the house: find a plate for a circle, a window for a square, or a sandwich slice for a triangle.
- Count the corners and sides together as you find each shape.
- For size questions, line up two real objects from the same starting edge so it is easy to see which one extends farther.
- For visual patterns, use two kinds of buttons or toys and arrange them in a repeating pattern, such as square, circle, square, circle — ask what comes next before checking the answer on paper.
For Teachers
For size comparisons, check that children are lining objects up from the same starting point before judging length — an object placed further forward can look 'longer' to a child even when it isn't.

Frequently asked questions
Does my Class 1 child need to memorize addition facts, or is counting each time okay?
Counting each time, on fingers or objects, is completely normal and expected at this stage. Instant recall of facts like '5+4=9' without counting typically develops in Class 2, not Class 1.
What shapes should a Class 1 child recognize?
The basic four: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle, including counting their sides and corners, which is exactly what this test's geometry questions check.
My child gets the arithmetic right but still gets word problems wrong. Why?
Word problems test a separate skill from calculation: keeping track of the beginning amount, the change, and the amount at the end. If your child can solve 7 - 4 correctly in isolation but freezes on "there are 7 shells and 4 are put away," draw the shells in two small groups before asking for the answer.
