NCERT Class 11 Science Syllabus โ€” Competitive Foundation Map

Not all Class 11 Science chapters carry equal weight. This map shows which Physics, Chemistry, and Biology chapters are tested in Class 12 boards AND in JEE/NEET, so PCM and PCB students can allocate revision time to the chapters that serve double duty.

15

Physics chapters

14

Chemistry chapters

22

Biology chapters

Priority key

Physics

Mechanics chapters feed every Class 12 chapter and JEE numerical sets.

Chemistry

Equilibrium and Thermodynamics appear in boards and both entrance exams.

Biology

Cell biology cluster is the single highest-yield block in NEET.

Subject streams

Three subject streams, two priority tiers each

Physics

15 chapters

High-leverage: boards + JEE

These chapters underpin every Class 12 dynamics, electrostatics, and optics chapter. JEE tests them directly in numericals, and boards use them for derivations.

  • Laws of Motion
  • Work, Energy and Power
  • Gravitation
  • Oscillations
  • Waves
  • Thermodynamics

Board foundation

Essential for board completeness and conceptual scaffolding. Not heavily weighted in JEE, but skipping them creates gaps in Class 12 chapters like Current Electricity and Ray Optics.

  • Units and Measurements
  • Motion in a Straight Line
  • Motion in a Plane
  • Mechanical Properties of Solids
  • Mechanical Properties of Fluids
  • Thermal Properties of Matter
  • Kinetic Theory
  • Physical World
  • System of Particles and Rotational Motion

Chemistry

14 chapters

High-leverage: boards + JEE/NEET

Equilibrium and Thermodynamics appear in both Class 12 boards and JEE with increased complexity. Hydrocarbons seed all of organic chemistry in Class 12 and NEET.

  • Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure
  • Equilibrium
  • Thermodynamics
  • Hydrocarbons
  • s-Block Elements
  • p-Block Elements (Groups 13 and 14)

Board foundation

These chapters establish the language and notation of chemistry. Environmental Chemistry is low-effort and yields reliable board marks. Skip none if targeting boards.

  • Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry
  • Structure of Atom
  • Classification of Elements and Periodicity
  • States of Matter
  • Redox Reactions
  • Hydrogen
  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry: Some Basic Principles

Biology

22 chapters

High-leverage: NEET-heavy

NEET tests these chapters heavily with diagram-based and assertion-reasoning questions. Cell biology and biomolecules are the single highest-yield cluster in the entire Biology section.

  • Cell: The Unit of Life
  • Biomolecules
  • Cell Cycle and Cell Division
  • Photosynthesis in Higher Plants
  • Respiration in Plants
  • Neural Control and Coordination
  • Chemical Coordination and Integration
  • The Living World (Kingdom classification)
  • Biological Classification
  • Plant Kingdom
  • Animal Kingdom

Board foundation

These chapters are tested extensively in boards with diagram and long-answer questions. They are lower weight in NEET, making them a PCB-track priority rather than a PCM one.

  • Morphology of Flowering Plants
  • Anatomy of Flowering Plants
  • Structural Organisation in Animals
  • Plant Growth and Development
  • Breathing and Exchange of Gases
  • Body Fluids and Circulation
  • Excretory Products and their Elimination
  • Locomotion and Movement
  • Digestion and Absorption
  • Transport in Plants
  • Mineral Nutrition

Practice prompts

Convert the priority map into active exam practice

Prompt 1

Generate a bridge test: 5 Class 11 Physics mechanics questions followed by 3 Class 12 dynamics warm-up questions on Newton's laws and energy conservation.

Prompt 2

Create a NEET-style Biology drill mixing 6 Cell Biology questions and 4 Biomolecules questions with assertion-reasoning format.

Prompt 3

Ask for a Chemistry equilibrium paper: 4 Class 11 equilibrium questions and 2 Class 12-style application questions on ionic equilibrium and buffer solutions.

Bottom explainer

Why Class 11 Science is structured as a competitive foundation map

Students choosing PCB or PCM face a hidden challenge: treating all 51 Class 11 Science chapters as equal effort is a time-allocation mistake. Many chapters serve only a board foundation role, while others carry double weight by appearing in Class 12 boards AND in JEE or NEET entrance exams. Revision time is finite, so knowing which chapters serve double duty changes the plan.

This page separates each subject stream into a high-leverage tier and a board foundation tier. PCM students can de-prioritise Biology foundation chapters and NEET-only classification content. PCB students can de-prioritise JEE-heavy Physics numerics beyond the mechanics core. Both tracks benefit from the shared double-duty chapters: Physics mechanics, Chemistry Equilibrium and Thermodynamics, and Biology cell biology. Revise those first, then fill the remaining tiers based on the exam track you are on.
